Neuer bilingualer Biologieunterricht in Klasse 9 / New bilingual Biology class for 9th graders

For the first time 9th grade students at MLS could choose between a bilingual Biology class and a German one. In our class there are 28 students and even more students wanted to attend. All of them are highly motivated and good at languages. We chose bilingual Biology because we wanted to experience what Biology in English is like and to practice speaking English fluently. The class is well organized. At first, it was hard to understand what we were talking about, but after a couple of lessons we got the hang of it and started to understand the biological terms. After that, it was a piece of cake. There are actually notmany differences to a German Biology class, only the language changes and we have an extra lesson to get into the topics more easily in the foreign language. Most of us would like to enroll in the bilingual Biology course in grade 11 to get the bilingual certificate with our graduation diploma. We would recommend bilingual Biology to all students who are interested in learning scientific English and want to practice speaking English fluently.

Deutsch: Dieses Jahr konnten sich Neuntklässler an unserer Schule zum ersten Mal zwischen einem bilingualen Biologiekurs und einem deutschen Bio-Kurs entscheiden.In unserem Kurs sind 28 Schüler und es wollten sogar noch mehr mitmachen. Alle sind motiviert und sprechen gut Englisch.Wir haben uns für den bilingualen Bio-Kurs entschieden, weil wir gerne Englisch sprechen und uns darin verbessern möchten. Außerdem wollten wir sehen, wie es ist, Biologie in englischer Sprache zu lernen. Der Unterricht ist gut vorbereitet und strukturiert. Am Anfang war es schwierig,alles zu verstehen, aber nach ein paar Stunden hatten wir uns an die neue Unterrichtssprache gewöhnt und konnten alle Fachwörter verstehen. Es gibt nicht wirklich viele Unterschiede zu einem deutschen Bio-Kurs außer der anderen Sprache und der einen zusätzlichen Unterrichtsstunde pro Woche (3 statt 2).Die meisten von uns möchten in der 11. Klasse auch den bilingualen Bio-Kurs wählen, um dann auch das Bilingualzertifikat zu bekommen. Wir würden den bilingualen Biologie-Kurs für Schüler empfehlen, die sich für Bio und Englisch interessieren und ihr Englisch verbessern möchten.

This year our school offered bilingual Biology for the classes 9 d/e/f for the first time. There are 28students in the class that Mrs. Lubeley teaches. We had the possibility to choose bilingual Biologyinstead of Biology in German. In addition to the two regular lessons we have got another lesson to have more time to understand and learn the English scientific terms. Most of us chose bilingual Biology because English is very important as a global language and it is the language of science, so it is good to know scientific terms in English. Even though it is sometimes difficult to memorize the English scientific terms, we do enjoy the lessons and experiments very much. We are very motivated and looking forward to the future bilingual Biology lessons!

Der Bilinguale Biologiekurs der Klassen 9 d/e/f besteht aus 13 Jungen und 15 Mädchen und wird von Frau Lubeley unterrichtet. Wir waren die Ersten, denen die Möglichkeit gegeben wurde, Biologie auf Englisch nicht als WPU-Fach, sondern als Alternative zum regulären deutschen Biologieunterricht zu wählen. Zusätzlich zu den zwei Wochenstunden haben wir noch eine dritte Stunde, um mehr Zeit für das Lernen und Verstehen der englischen Begriffe zu haben. Viele von uns haben Bio auf Englisch gewählt, weil es eben die Weltsprache ist und es besonders bei Naturwissenschaften gut ist, englische Wörter zu wissen. Obwohl es etwas schwieriger ist, sich die englischen Fachbegriffe zu merken, haben wir alle sehr viel Spaß am Unterricht und den Experimenten. Wir sind alle sehr motiviert und freuen uns auf die weitere Zeit!
